A job with purpose

Entry-level comms and digital marketing position

You need just three things to do this job.

1.      A belief in your gut that by transforming food & farming, we can meet civilisation’s greatest challenges.

2.      Copywriting.

3.      A hunger to learn.

Open Farms exists to reconnect urban Kiwis with our land, food and farmers through a nationwide open farm day experience. We’re looking for an entry-level communications all-rounder to support our founder to deliver our national open farm day.

This is a varied role with a big emphasis on learning – ideal for a young-gun interested in start-up culture, social impact and digital-first business.

A day in the life

  • Learning. For the right person, this role is a crash-course in modern marketing. Through short online courses (which we’ll cover), on-the-job training and consistent support and guidance, you’ll leave with the ability to market your mission.

  • Content creation. Writing up case studies, planning and moderating social media feeds, working with our graphic design or video team.

  • Community support. Working with our two key audiences – farmer hosts and visitors – to manage issues and ensure events run smoothly.

  • Stakeholders. Working alongside sponsors and supporters to amplify Open Farms communications.

  • Digital marketing. The nuts and bolts of modern comms – you’ll manage social media marketing campaigns, draft community emails, monitor adwords campaigns and update the website.

  • PR. You’ll work alongside our PR agency to find and amplify great farmer stories.

Experience

  • We don’t care about degrees or previous work experience. We care about attitude and ability to learn.

  • This role would suit a recent graduate, aspiring entrepreneur or someone pivoting their career. We’re after the kind of person who will probably leave in a few years to pursue their own purpose after a fair exchange - your hard work and dedication to our mission, for first-hand experience of impact marketing.

Skills

  • The ability to write clear and compelling copy is fundamental to this role. You will live in your inbox, draft social media posts, update webpages, proof media stories and more.

  • You’ll be able to work independently and google your way around problems and challenging tasks (with plenty of support from the team too).

  • The ability to ‘talk farmer’ based on some experience with New Zealand farms is preferrable.

Timing

  • An immediate start ahead of the 2022 Open Farms campaign (early February to late May).

  • The workload will vary as the project ramps up to the event (currently scheduled for May 15). Anticipate around 10-20 hours per week in February & March, then 20-30 hours per week in April & May.

  • Looking further ahead, there will be a place in Dirt Road Comms for the right person. This purpose marketing agency runs Open Farms and supports progressive Kiwis in building a just, regenerative food system.

Location

  • Remote working, New Zealand based preferred.

Salary

  • $35 per hour, working to a contractor agreement (we’ll help you navigate contractor life if it’s your first time).

Apply

  • We’re not interested in your cut and paste cover letter.

  • Along with your CV, tell us in 150 words why you believe food & farming can be a force for good. Send it all to dan@dirtroadcomms.co.nz by January 30. Every application will receive a response.
